Tuesday Night Time Trial (TNT)

August 15, 2006
Medina, Minnesota
11 Miles

I was feeling pretty good after the Turtleman Triathlon 3 days earlier and I wanted to keep the racing going. Minnesota summer is pretty short and I really wanted to enjoy more summer racing. This was the last of the time trial series for the summer. It was a great night and I felt ready to race.

Pre-Race
I felt pretty recovered and was motivated to ride a good time trial. I was especially eager to see what kind of wattage I could produce as I had trouble with my power meter in Turtleman a few days before. Low and behold, I had more technical difficulties with the power meter and could not get the display to produce a readout. Oh well, the show must go on.

Warm up goes well and I ride around for at least half an hour including some race paced efforts. I felt good and ready to race. I roll up to the line and am ready to go. I was a lot more comfortable with the standing start in this race, in my last time trial, I had trouble getting used to the feeling of being upright and stationary. This time I was ready to go and with the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and GO!!!, I was off.

Any time trial of 11 miles is going to be painful and this race was no exception. I started hard and kept it up. I felt fairly good and my cadence is quick and I keep turning over a decent sized gear. There is not really much to report aside from the fact that I worked as hard as I could. I got passed right before the turn around by a guy who looked quite strong. I tried to hold him at a decent distance for awhile only to realize that I couldn't hold it any longer. I hit halfway in a time that was solid.

This course has several rolling hills and the steepest is immediately after the turn around. This hill hurts, and today was no exception. I was happy to crest the hill and was able to maintain a decent pace afterward. Through the next few miles I kept the high pace up and seemed to be making good progress. The only notable thing about the finish was that I mistook a series of construction cones near the finish line for the line and that was a major bummer. I was ready to be done but had another quarter of a mile to go. I hit the line in 26:35, a time about 10 seconds faster than the last time I had done the time trial.

Post Race
This is a good time trial series and I was glad to have come out. I enjoyed a nice warm down ride with some other racers, can't beat the good company of fellow racers.

Power Data
I was disappointed to not have power data for this ride. Given that the time was quite close to my last ride, using the same equipment in similar climatic conditions I would guess my power to be with a few watts of my last time trial. Given that I had surgery in late June that was encouraging to me.
