Coach Jason in St. Louis for USA Cycling Clinic
Over the weekend of December 9 and 10, Coach Jason was in St. Louis
for USA Cycling's power based training clinic. It was a great weekend
to hang out with other power geeks. St. Louis felt just like Minnesota,
there was snow on the ground and the clinic was held at a hockey
rink. Jason learned a great deal and his notes on power based training
can be found here.
November Weekend in Colorado Springs
Coach Jason was in Colorado Springs the first weekend of November.
He attended a USA Triathlon coaching clinic at the Olympic Training
Center. The clinic focused on training and racing long course triathlon
and was a great event. Thanks to USA Triathlon's staff and Gordo
Byrn for organizing. Jason's thoughts on the clinic can be found
here.

While in Colorado Springs, Jason spent time on the legendary Barr
Trail. This trail which gains 7,000 feet in 13 miles on its way
from Manitou Springs to Pike's Peak was a great adventure. A full
description of Jason's time on the trail is here.

Dig It Triathlon at Ironman Wisconsin
Dig It Triathlon athletes Steve and Tim complete Ironman Wisconsin
on a tough day with lots of wind, rain and temperatures in the 50s.
Steve and Tim overcame a choppy swim with a lot of current, a rainy
and windy bike ride and a cold and wet run on their way to the finish
line and the great words "you are an Ironman." Way to
go guys! Coach Jason was glad to be there to cheer and watch their
Ironman dreams come true.
Steve runs in the rain amidst cheers from the cold spectators.
Tim looks strong as he passes one of the many barns you'll see
on the great IM Wisconsin course.

enjoyed his longest ride of the year on the Ironman course. Charlot
Meyer and Coach Jason raced at the Turtleman Triathlon in Shoreview,
Minnesota. Despite a bike accident, Charlot had the best race of
her life. Focusing on having fun carried Charlot through a tough
patch as she got back going after her crash, way to go Charlot!

Race Report for 10K to the World's Longest Tramway
Sunday May 21 7 AM
For each of the past four years I have been serious about my running
for six or eight months. As part of my plan to pass the threshold
to become a yearlong runner I signed up for my first half marathon
in August and joined forces with Coach Jason in April. Having spent
my running career in Chicago, St. Louis and the Netherlands I have
had virtually no experience with climbing hills. I was a bit nervous
about making my first timed run in years be an uphill battle but
with Jason's encouragement happily signed on.
As I perused the race's website I realized just how tough it would
be. Starting at 4900' and ending at 6500' may seem difficult enough
in itself but what really worried me was the assertion that the
last mile, averaging a 12% uphill grade was by far the toughest.
With Coach Jason's support I concentrated on building up mileage
safely and getting my body ready for the climb. As my body was presented
with new physical stresses, I suffered a few minor tendon problems
along the outside of my right leg during the two weeks before the
race. Coach Jason's guidance helped me get back to my training safely
and as quickly as possible.
On raceday I felt great on my warmup jog and stretching before the
start. A field of seventy runners I picked a spot near the middle
of the crowd. Within a few minutes I realized that I had begun too
quickly. Keeping focus I slowed my pace to a more comfortable rate
as the long climb began. For me, the most difficult part of the
race was the middle section which was flat enough that I could not
visualize a major climb but steep enough to create a real stress
on my body. Mile marker five was at the turn to the mountain road
up to the finishline. Having saved energy for a push I was able
to finish the final mile and a quarter feeling good and moving quickly.
It was a wonderful return to the world of racing, increasing my
excitement for my next race, the Chicago Distance Classic, in two
and a half months.
Elliott Weiss

Coach Jason gets his 2006 racing season
underway with at the Gear West Duathlon
in Orono, Minnesota on Sunday May 21. On a clear and cool
Sunday morning, Jason ran 5K, biked 30K and then ran 4K in the western
Twin Cities suburbs. It was a great race and a complete recap
can be found here.

Over the weekend of May 12-14, Jason attended a USA Triathlon Level One Coaching Certification course in West Burlington, Iowa. It was great weekend of learning and hanging out with other triathlon coaches. Below is a picture of the group, Jason is in the bottom row on the far left.

Coach Jason completes his second Ironman at Ironman Wisconsin. On a surprisingly hot day, Jason had a decent swim, a good bike and a run that was less than ideal to complete the course is 12:27. Learning many lessons on the day, Jason emerges from his second Ironman with a whole new respect for the distance and the people who take on that challenge. |
